Evaporated Milk Recipe

Evaporated Milk Recipe

Every time I’ve needed evaporated milk in recipes, I used to go out and buy evaporated milk until I realized that it can be made at home with only 1 staple ingredient that everyone has at home. Evaporated milk might not be readily available in your area, or it could be too expensive which is why this recipe is perfect!

Makes 1 cup of Evaporated Milk

Ingredients:

-2 cups milk

Instructions:

1. In a heavy bottom saucepan, add the milk and bring to a simmer.

2. Stir occasionally to prevent the milk from burning and cook for about 30 minutes, or until the amount of milk has halved in quantity.

Store in the refrigerator for about 6 months and use in any recipe that calls for evaporated milk.

Notes

What Is Evaporated Milk

Evaporated milk is essentially unsweetened condensed milk. It is used to add richness and thickness to soups, chowders, coffees, and smoothies. It can be used as a replacement for sweetened condensed milk if you don’t like the addition of sugar in recipes.

Evaporated milk vs Condensed milk

The largest notable difference between condensed milk and evaporated milk is the sugar content. Condensed milk has additional sugar while evaporated milk does not require any extra sugar

Stirring the pot occasionally

It’s important to look over the milk and stir it occasionally so that none of it sticks to the bottom of the pan and burns.

Use a nonstick pan

To make clean up easier, make sure to use a nonstick pan if you own one. If not, soak the pan with water and some dish soap and then scrub to remove any residue.
